The Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City has two immediate PhD positions, which are anticipated to start in January 2020. Successful candidates will be hired as Graduate Assistants (GAs) in Dr. Nikola Markovic's research group focusing on (a) applications of operations research in optimizing transportation systems, and (b) applications of machine learning and visualization in the analysis of big transportation data. A successful candidate should have a strong background in at least one of the following areas: optimization, statistical modeling, machine learning, big data analytics & visualization, transportation engineering. The candidate should also feel comfortable implementing algorithms and processing data in at least one general-purpose programming language (Python, C++, R, MATLAB). Experience with mathematical programming software (GAMS, CPLEX, AIMMS) is an asset, as is familiarity with machine learning libraries (scikit-learn, TensorFlow). An earned Master’s degree in engineering, computer science, applied math or physics is preferred, but not required. All students must submit GRE scores, while international students must also submit TOEFL scores. The application deadline is September 1.
The selected candidate is expected to (a) take 8 courses across different departments during the first 3 semesters, and (b) work for 20 hours/week on a funded project throughout the PhD studies. The funding package will include tuition remission and a starting salary of $1,900/month (before taxes), which should provide for decent student living in Salt Lake City, Utah. The city itself is known for its easy access to exquisite outdoor activities (world-class skiing, hiking, kayaking, fly fishing) and relative proximity to some of the most famous national parks in the world (Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, Grand Teton, Zion, Arches, Bryce).
